Char-Tucky Shirts - The Rest Of The Story

I’ve lived in Charlotte for about three and a half years now, and one of the first things I learned after moving here was a term I’d never heard before:  Char-Tucky.

It seemed like everyone knew what it meant except me.  I soon learned it wasn’t meant to be a compliment. Many people outside of Charlotte (and some within) used it to make fun of the city.  A way of saying we were too rural, too small-town, not sophisticated enough, or somehow less than other communities.

It upset people enough that there were attempts to stomp it out.  Someone even told me they used to get into fights over the term during their high school days.  People took it personally because they knew it was being used to put down their town, their friends, and the place they called home.  In other words, people used the term to get a rise out of us.

This got me thinking.  As someone who moved here from somewhere else, I don’t carry years of baggage with the term, which gives me a different perspective. I see a community full of people who care deeply about where they live and the people around them.

I see neighbors helping neighbors; volunteers showing up for community events; people supporting local businesses because they want them to succeed.  I see loyalty; humor; and people who genuinely care about each other.

So I started asking myself: if those are the qualities people are mocking when they say “Char-Tucky,” why not turn the term around and celebrate these qualities instead? Truth is, the things that make Charlotte special aren’t always flashy.

We’re not a big city and we shouldn’t try to be.  What we do have is a strong sense of community. We know people by name. We check on each other. We lend a hand. We laugh at ourselves. We tell stories. We gather on front porches, at local businesses, at community events, and everywhere in between. These things may never be considered sophisticated.  But they definitely matter.

In a world full of disconnection, these qualities are becoming increasingly rare.  That’s what inspired me to start creating Char-Tucky shirts; not to make fun of Charlotte but to celebrate it; to claim a nickname meant as an insult and make it a positive.

My designs celebrate our humor, traditions, characters, and quirks that make small-town life unique. They remind us that a community doesn’t need to be perfect to be worth loving.  In fact, it’s those imperfections that make a place feel like home.

So, if Char-Tucky means loyalty, kindness, resilience, humor, and a community that takes care of its own, then lets stop apologizing for it and wear it proudly.  After all, the people who use the term as an insult don’t understand what makes this place special in the first place.  And if they don’t want to know, we don’t need them.
